Early Mercury records in the "Living Presence" series presented some of the finest recorded sound ever heard. This particular recording was made in 1957 in the excellent accoustic of the town hall in Watford, north of London.
Three microphones and a three-track recorder were used for the tape master, and the tape-to-disc transfer was via a Scully automatic variable pitch recording lathe in an age where all amplification was achieved with valve amplifiers.
In spite of a higher level of tape and vinyl hiss than in later recordings, it is the spacious ambience and clarity of records such as this which give the analogue vinyl recordings of the period their deserved reputation.
